FIRST BORDER HEALTH MISSION (BHM) 2008 DOMINICAN REPBLIC/HAITI BORDER, MONTECRISTI PROVINCE

POR VALENTIN ABREU DESDE MISION FRONTERIZA

FUNTOSALUD (the Spanish acronym for “All for Health,”), a humanitarian aid, non-profit organization, made the initial move to assist this severely disadvantaged and neglected population with medical assistance and food. New York-based groups such as the Dominican-Haitian Project, Stepping Stones Ministries (SSM), The Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR), the Dominican Medical Association, Hispanic Health Professionals of New York, the Dominican Cultural Civic Center, HeritageKonpa, the MalcolmX & Dr. Betty Shabazz Educational and Memorial center also responded to the humanitarian call. These organizations currently make up the BHM coordinating committee, partners and sponsors.
BHM aims to recruit 32 health professionals from the Dominico-Haitian Diaspora in the United States with the goal of performing humanitarian and solidarity work on the island’s border rural communities. This multidisciplinary/multilingual team approach is the most efficient modus operandi, mainly as we planned to combine it with a model of sustainable development, established to bring a yearly Health Mission to improve the lives of individuals leaving in impoverished borderline communities and within the Bateyes in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The BHM Health Provider team will consist of:
10 Medical Doctors, various specialties
10 Nurses
03 Pharmacists
05 Paramedics
01 Psychology
01 Therapeutic Message Practitioner
02 Social Workers
32 Total Health Providers and Professionals
BHM goals are to:

Provide free primary medical care to beneficiaries—2,500 low-income people from borderline rural area.

Ship a container replete with humanitarian relief aid.

Provide beneficiaries with free medicines, food, toys and preventive workshops.

Fundraise for the completion of the medical center; hence, we could be able to benefit a larger number of individuals on a long-term basis with quality and holistic care.
Besides serving as a model for sustainable development, BHM is also a response to the current socioeconomic conditions hampering neighboring Haiti’s development, forcing thousands of brothers and sisters in dire physical and health conditions to flee to Manzanillo.
